As Tuesday dawned citizens of the world's most polluted city were faced with breathing severely hazardous air that registered in the "alarming" category.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Levels

Multiple areas of Delhi recorded an air quality index over 500, which represents ten times the healthy level established by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, readings of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1800, amounting to 15-20x exceeding healthy standards.

Fireworks Prohibition and Current Changes

Beginning in 2020, authorities had enforced a complete ban on the sale and use of firecrackers during celebrations due to their major role to the deadly pollution that engulfs the capital as the cold season approaches.

However recently, the recently formed local leadership petitioned the judicial authority to request a relaxation of the ban.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically criticized by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a middle ground between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Judicial Verdict and Enforcement

To the disappointment of medical and ecological campaigners, judges agreed to the request, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during limited hours throughout the festival.

On Monday night, there was widespread flouting of the time restrictions across the city, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Several air quality sensors throughout the city recorded pollution peaking around midnight to extremely hazardous levels seen during celebrations in at least three years.

International Consequences

The widespread use of firecrackers during the celebrations also sparked a dispute with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab partly blaming declining pollution levels in Lahore on hazardous particles coming from across the border following the events.

Long-Standing Environmental Issue

The dangerously high concentrations of pollution in Delhi have continued as a major problem for more than 15 years, with the situation showing no improvement.

Around Diwali, the levels of toxic particles in the environment has been found to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the worst levels ever documented in China's capital, which was once viewed as the globally most contaminated metropolis.

Diverse Contamination Sources

The problem in Delhi is resulting from a mix of various sources including automobile exhaust, construction debris, construction activities, rubbish burning and smoke from crop residue ignition in adjacent states of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, farmers illegally ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, generating dangerous smog that becomes contained over the city as colder air descends.

Health and Economic Toll

Both financial and medical impact on the nearly 33 million residents residing in the Delhi area is enormous, according to numerous investigations.

This pollution leads to high levels of nervous system, cardiovascular and breathing diseases, and can potentially cause malignancies.

Environmental contamination is estimated to be accounting for 10,000 premature deaths each year in the capital.
